Challenges and strategic responses

Join our hybrid dialogue event on 10 June where we will discuss challenges for transitional justice in Asia with experts from Asia Justice and Rights (AJAR)

How do efforts around accountability influence the prospects for peace in Myanmar? What does truth-seeking, justice and healing mean for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh? How does peace look like in Timor-Leste today? How can justice and the rule of law be strengthened in Indonesia after the presidential elections? Across Asia, there is an increasing trend of returning to authoritarian rule, amidst ongoing conflicts and the growing anti-democracy influence of China and Russia.

Faced with these trends, civil society organisations, human rights activists, and democracy supporters are engaging in numerous strategic and creative initiatives to empower survivors, support truth-seeking, and uphold human rights as well as the rule of law.

On 10 June, experts from Asia Justice and Rights (AJAR), a regional human rights organisation working to increase the capacities of local and national organisations in fighting impunity and Hub network partner, will join us at the Berghof Foundation in Berlin to discuss challenges for transitional justice in Asia.

Galuh Wandita, co-founder and Executive Director of AJAR, Patrick Burgess, the President and co-founder of the organisation, and Moses Gum who works as a Programme Coordinator for AJAR’s Myanmar programme, will explore current trends and challenges of supporting transitional justice and peacebuilding in the Asia-Pacific region. They will share their experiences, lessons learned and prospects for peace.
